Sports Ministry

Why Sports Ministry?

Leonardtown Baptist offers a sports ministry because we believe faith should be lived out in every part of life, including the activities people love most. Sports create a natural way to build relationships, encourage teamwork, and connect with people who might not otherwise step into a church. Through friendly competition and shared experiences, we create a welcoming environment where character, integrity, and Christ-centered values can grow. It’s not just about the game, it’s about building community, mentoring others, and showing God’s love in a practical, relatable way.

Sports Opportunities

League games offer a more structured and competitive experience. Players or teams participate in a scheduled season with standings, organized matchups, and potential playoffs. These games are ideal for those looking for consistency, teamwork, and a higher level of competition while still developing a sense of community.

Casual games are relaxed, drop-in style play designed for fun, fellowship, and flexibility. There’s no long-term commitment, just show up, play, and enjoy time with others. These games are perfect for all skill levels and focus on building community in a low-pressure environment.

Open play (or open gym) is an unstructured time where individuals can come and go freely to play, practice, or just enjoy the game. There are no formal teams, schedules, or referees, just a relaxed environment where participants can jump in, rotate in and out, and play with others in a casual and welcoming setting.

Pickup games are informal, player-organized games where teams are formed on the spot. Players rotate in and out between games, and competition is friendly, but a bit more structured than open play. It’s a great way to get in a good run, challenge yourself, and enjoy the game with others in a laid-back setting.

We use the TeamReach app to help organize and coordinate open-play and pickup games for volleyball and pickleball. Through TeamReach, you can see when others are planning to play, join upcoming games, and communicate easily with the group. Click on any of the pickleball or volleyball games to see further information for how to join one of these amazing groups!

House Rules & Resources

The CLC gym is a shared space provided for fellowship, recreation, and ministry. To help maintain a safe, respectful, and Christ-centered environment, all participants are expected to follow these guidelines:

Event Identification

All activities held in the gym should be clearly organized and identifiable. Events should reflect the sport or activity being played and have a designated responsible individual overseeing the group at all times.

Supervision & Access

A sponsoring church member with authorized keycard access must be present for the entire duration of the activity from arrival to departure. This individual is responsible for ensuring that all rules are followed.

Keycards are issued for individual use only and must never be shared, transferred, or used to grant access to unauthorized individuals, including family members.

Responsibility for Facility & Equipment

Participants are expected to treat the facility, equipment, and all church property with care and respect. Any damage, whether accidental or intentional, is the responsibility of the individual(s) involved and may require repair or replacement at their expense.

Cleanliness & Closing Responsibilities

Groups are responsible for leaving the gym in the same or better condition than it was found. This includes:

  • Straightening Child Check-In Desk
  • Lost & Found: Left Items to A-Wing Workroom
  • Thermostats set to System, Fan, Auto
  • All Trash Cleared from Bathrooms, CLC, and Child-Check-in
  • Floors Swept and Mopped (Mopped only if needed)
  • Tables and Chairs Returned to Proper Locations
  • All Lights are Out
  • Restrooms: Flushed, Faucets off, and Prop the Doors
  • All Exterior Doors are Shut and Locked

Failure to fill out the closing checklist on the touch-screen outside of the CLC or properly cleaning and resetting the CLC may result in suspension or loss of gym privileges for future use.

Safety & Injury Reporting

Safety is a priority. Participants should use equipment appropriately and be mindful of others at all times.

In the event of an injury or accident, it should be reported using the form below as soon as possible so proper documentation and care can be provided.

Appropriate Conduct

All individuals using the gym are expected to demonstrate respectful, sportsmanlike, and Christ-honoring behavior. This includes:

  • Using appropriate language

  • Resolving conflicts peacefully

  • Showing respect to others, regardless of skill level

  • Avoiding any behavior that could lead to harm or disruption

Scheduling & Use Approval

Use of the gym is not guaranteed and is subject to availability, church priorities, and staff approval. Church-sponsored ministries and events may take precedence over recreational use.

Compliance with Church Policies

All gym usage must align with the broader mission, values, and policies of the church. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in denied access or revoked privileges.
