LBC Existing and Proposed By-Laws

Welcome to LBC!  – ByLaws – LBC Existing and Proposed By-Laws

LBC's Existing and Proposed By-Laws

Dear Leonardtown Baptist Church Member,

The ad-hoc committee for the Constitution and By-Laws, with the support of the Pastors and Church Council, is pleased to present you with the attached revised By-Laws for your consideration.   The church body will be voting to approve them at the February business meeting.  On January 6 at 7:00 PM, there will be a question and answer session with the committee where all members are welcome to come for discussion on the proposed By-Laws.

When revising the By-Laws, the committee focused on maintaining accountability, providing flexibility, and ensuring that all legal requirements are met.  As you will notice, our revision to the By-Laws is extensive, but we are pleased with the final product.  Here is a brief outline of the By-Laws:

  • Article I Membership – This article has undergone the least amount of change with some revised wording and organization.
  • Article II Board of Directors – This brief article was created to fulfill the legal requirement of a corporation and notably takes the place of the Trustees positions.
  • Article III Church Leadership – This article includes descriptions and categories of Staff, description of Deacon’s roles and responsibilities, and description of Ministry Leaders/Teams.
  • Article IV Church Officers – This article covers the roles and responsibilities of the Treasurer,  Moderator, and Clerk.
  • Article V Church Planning – This article explains how LBC operates including updates as to how we do business.
  • Article VI Constitution and By-Laws Amendments and Review – This article describes the process to amend the church constitution and by-laws.
  • Article VII Policies – This last article explains the purpose of church policies.

There are several things throughout the document that you will notice. Where applicable, committees will now be referred to as “Ministry Teams”.  Also, the majority of individual ministry teams are no longer listed in the By-Laws, but they still exist and retain their line-item in the church budget.

The changes that we propose to our existing by-laws are lengthy, but they do not significantly change the way that the church currently operates.  Please prayerfully consider this document and feel free to bring your questions to any member of the Constitution and By-Laws committee.  Copies of both the proposed and current bylaws can be found below.  We look forward to hearing from you!
